And for the grand finale...
Sure, this one is short, like some other slots we'd seen this week. But this one is Chambers. I first descended Chambers last FreezeFest, when instead of descending a slot canyon, it felt like descending a friggin' crevasse. I was anxious to see it again.
Up on top, we killed about as much time as we could possibly stand before finally hitting the trail. We left about 12:15, which by my estimation, is still too early for this time of year. I'm convinced that the time to hit Chambers is right about 3 pm (depending on time of year, of course.) But alas, the sun would not move any faster today, and our hunger for some greasy fries at Ray's overwhelmed us.
Regretfully, we got to the canyon around 12:30. I packed a backpack with water, food, and a tripod that IĀ anticipated lowering down into the chamber, to be picked up on the way back. Well, clearly my memory failed me. What I figured I could do with a 70 foot rope turned out to be more like 120 feet. No way my rope would make it to the bottom. Which meant IĀ had no food or water to go through the canyon. Oh well, I drank down a bunch of water, pounded a granola bar, and left my pack at the head.
We dropped in, and made quick work of the first super skinny section, which I found doubly more enjoyable sans pack. We arrived at the Chamber in around 40 minutes, and sure enough, the light was still in it's penumbral stages. Nevertheless, there was some mediocre glow, so we hung out and snapped a few photos.
Then came the upclimbs. Always interesting to do a canyon multiple times to see how the body adjusts and the skills improve. What I found to be very exhausting in December, turned out to be simply enjoyable this time around. We did find a carabiner tied to some webbing at one downclimb, which we cleaned. A few more ups and downs, and we were out. Lots more footprints down in the exit wash nowadays. Something tells me this secret is out...
All in all, pretty good trip. Covered a lot of new ground for me, and saw plenty of new interesting places. Now, if this Indian Summer would last until January...
